Growlithe/Arcanine would be fantastic.

I think a Raichu would be good. It's fast, can attack from afar, and is about the size/weight of a large irl dog so it could do some damage if it's in close contact with an intruder. And it would still be small enough to comfortably have in your home.

I'm not sure its the absolute best but I think a Nidorino wouldn't be a bad choice.
