Real talk? I kind of wish Wally's Gardevoir had stayed a Gardevoir instead of becoming a Gallade. It would help show that every Gardevoir doesn't have to be a female.

But I understand it, I mean there was just Diantha after all and I can't think of any other prominent trainer with a Gallade since they've been introduced. And mega Gallade had just been introduced and all.

I never really thought Gardevoir's sprite incredibly feminine in the sprite, It could have passed as a mage like creature. But the Mega form, and the way it's depicted in Pokken really tells a different tale.

I think you're exactly right. Pretty sure Gardevoir was supposed to be more androgynous when it was designed, but people interpreted it as highly feminine so I guess they made Gallade and made Gardevoir more and more feminine in response to its reception.

All-Male Ballet + Romeo and Juliette
Loyal Guardian

Child -> Adult Woman who is protective of her family (the trainer)

Joan of Arc

I think the main point was for Gardevoir to just be pretty and delicate. A lot of these things reference to being a guardian in many forms, a knight, an angel, a mother, ballet, etc. So really it's fine the way it is, the only time I am uncomfortable with a male is with the mega where I start thinking "they might as well just make it female only at this point". Because it is clear to me that it's now a queen (cinderella especially) or valkyrie (or freya, the leader of them and "mother", and even Hestia, Aphrodite or Athena)

There's more to this pokemon than almost any other, but I would definitely not be against it becoming female only. It's just it doesn't really matter that it wasn't and will never be because you have a choice.

Actually Gardevior is meant to be a samurai. They just made it more obvious with Gallade as Amerifags don't seem to know what a Samurai looks like. Regular gardevior is meant to be masculine.

Look at the entire evolutionary line, especially Kirlia which is a ballerina with barely any other possible interpretations. It's hard to tell what exactly they were doing with that name, because while sir may not be a male honorific in japanese, it still could have been romanized.

Example: Kirlia in English is Kirlia in Japanese

I like to think of it as bad engrish and we just interpret it badly because of it, like "hey guys hurr Im Sir Knight hurr durr Knight is my last name and I'm male, so that makes me Sir Knight" This is what it sounds like.

I'd say Gardevoir is more like a guardian angel. Being a Psychic type and actually being able to learn quite a few moves closely related to Ghost types (will o wisp, destiny bond, shadow sneak, etc...) both allude to this.

No you are exactly right, it would make complete sense to base it on a Guardian Angel. It makes sense to base it on the entire list of interpretations combined, and they can all easily relate to eachother. But I truly do believe its number 1 base concept was an astral Guardian - it's name in Korean is literally just Guardian. And Gardevoir basically means in french "Dutiful Guard". It's feminine because it's obviously now an angel with themes relating to ballet and being delicate. It's related to being a mother as well with the embrace thing which brings me to its mega. The reason why it looks the way it does is because it's taken a step further into deities like Athena, Minerva, Freyja, Hestia and Aphrodite etc but also taken aspects of royalty from being the servant Cinderella to becoming a Queen or gaining a ball gown.

This is my interpretation of Gardevoir though, since it's been my fav for like 13 years I've been able to give it some thought. Like I said earlier, I do think they should just make it female only, but it doesn't matter that much because at least it's not 100% male or mostly male.

I'll tell you what it's not though, a samurai.

Mega Gardevoir is 100% supposed to be a Queen or Cinderella though, which would make sense considering X and Y had RPG based themes Chesnaught, Delphox and Greninja (Knight, Mage, Rogue) fighting their way to find the princess at the end (Mega Gardevoir). Then combine it with Norse mythology and bam there's Freyja (which would extend upon Gardevoir being a female knight like Joan, Minerva, Athena and also a symbol of love and warmth like hestia)

As a side note, Juliette is also depicted with having wings.
