Yeah, I think I saw two other people total in the three stores. Even a couple years ago there would at least be a kid and a parent/grandparent there, but I guess grabbing the new blops and xbone at wallmart is better for average people and dedicated games stores can't cover every potential customers desires and make profit.

I think it's also representative of the decline of console gaming. these stores really only serve console needs. PC has steam/battle.net, and phones have their own e-store and most people just use their phones.

Pretty much. HGSS are the best games in the series. People would cry about the level curve or lack of "x" type of pokémon or weird distribution but in reality those things are present in every generation. In other words all pokémon games have one way or another those flaws. So given that constant it leaves us with the best Game Freak can do.

No, it's not. I just recently played through HG. I steamrolled through Chuck, Jasmine, and Pryce all at around level 33, and then the Kanto leaders at around level 50. Having things too open doesn't mix well with a game that expects you to be a specific level by the end. The game is a damn slog to play through because you end up wading through a marsh of underleveled shits, and then it throws something like Archer's Houndoom at you which is 15 levels higher than the underleveled shitters you've been fighting, but haven't been able to gain any EXP off of.
