I don't think you can blame Americans for not knowing about z=zed and not zee in other English speaking countries. Most of read lots of British books, listen to British celebrities, and even hear British news reports. But I don't recall hearing them say "zed" for some reason. Obviously it doesn't work with written word. But I have no memory of listening to people say "zed" instead of "zee" and being all like "wait, what? zed instead of zee? I thought zed was an ancient greek thing used only as a motif?" I'm pretty sure "zed" isn't used when the British guy on NPR references and acronym with "z" in it. It would also make any acronym sound like shit.
