It's not about having battled once. First of all, Pokémon competitions usually require you to do at least 3 battles. But for this shiny Mewtwo, you're required to have earned at least 1 championship point.

Then you most likely got Play! point from previous events. The Mewtwo isn't tied to that tournament. You needed to get at least one through the whole season to get it.

Timid is always nice for regular and Mega Y. Jolly or Hasty is nice for Mega X.

Berries are fairly common in VGC. You can use regular Mewtwo/wait before mega evolving so your opponent can't use their Sitrus Berry. That could turn a 3-hit K.O. into a 2-hit K.O. Also stops you opponent from using Chesto or Lum Berry if they're trying to protect themselves from Dark Void etc.
