GSC, despite my love for them, definitely had flaws.
Gold and Silver really didn't handle the new types very well.
Let's look at what's available before the E4 for Steel:
>Forretress, an evolution
>Steelix, a trade evolution that requires an item that must be obtained from a Magnemite to get before the E4
>Scizor, see above
>Magnemite, Magneton
>Skarmory, a late-game mon
To GS's credit, none of these are locked to post-game, not exactly great for a mono-run, but not nearly as terrible as Dark.
Umbreon is the only Dark-type Pokémon you can obtain before the E4, in Crystal you can also get Sneasel in Ice Path, but that's late-game.
The new types really weren't handled well in GSC, and Dragon and Ghost being scarce was still a problem, with GSC only introducing one new Pokémon of those types each.

Now let's look at these four types and how they were treated with Hoenn's new batch of Pokémon:
>Steel
>Aron right before the second gym, along with Mawile if you had Ruby
>one of the new pseudo lines are Steel-type
>the champion is mostly Steel-themed
>Steel-type legendary
>Dragon
>more than doubled the amount of Dragon-types
>access to Swablu that evolves into Altaria after the third gym
>access to Trapinch that evolves into Vibrava/Flygon after the fourth gym
>another Dragon pseudo
>new legendary duo are Dragons
>trio master, and the box legendary of Emerald is Dragon-type
>Ghost
>introduced more Ghost-types than Gen 1 and 2 combined(not much of an accomplishment though)
>access to Nincada whose discarded shell becomes Shedinja before the first gym, one of the most unique ways to obtain a Pokémon and one of the most unique Pokémon gameplay-wose
>Sableye before the second gym if you had Sapphire
>Shuppet/Banette after the sixth gym
>Duskull/Dusclops after the sixth gym as well
>Dark
>Poochyena is literally the first Pokémon you encounter in the game, almost like an apology for handling the type so badly
>Poochyena/Mightyena catchable in the very first route
>if you had Ruby, Seedot that evolves into Nuzleaf/Shiftry is in the third route you traverse in the game
>Sableye right before the second gym
>Cacnea right after the fourth gym that evolves into Cacturne
>Corphish available after the fifth gym, evolves into the Water/Dark Crawdaunt
>Carvanha/Sharpedo also available after the fifth gym
>Absol available right before the sixth gym
Far more feasible for a dark type mono-run, don't you think?
Gen 6 is total trash. There's nothing good or redeeming about it at all.
Sorry, looks like I can't participate.
Gen 5
As much as I hate the majority of its designs and it's shot graphics I now before it's
>infinite TM use
>asking if you would like to use a repel again
>allowing you to heal multiple pokemon without returning to the bag
