Kanto is comfy, peaceful and kind of lonely. It looks and feels like a proper region, the suburban area around your hourse you'd explore as a kid looking for bugs, tadpoles or cool places, go biking or fishing, get into figths with other kids and so on, and not some bussy noisy theme park where even the wild pokemon feel set up.

Hoenn is great.
The water doesn't bother me so much.
I think it added to the sensation of exploring when you were diving.
It was easier to lose your place and feel a little lost.
The only thing that bothers me is the textures.
They're just so different from Gen II, and really every gen afterward

It has a simple linear designed path. It would be very difficult to get lost in progress until after the 2nd gym. The gym gives a bump in difficulty by making you gain access to the ss anne before being able to get the third badge.
The second part of the game opens up with an area that has three new towns to explore, the team rocket story line as well as a few others, and a place that lets you train your by now large team. You can easily train a few pokemon to mid levels through this 'middle' game section. Once your strong enough, you go to the last mainland area, which is a kind of bonus area, to test your strength.
The last part is the island, and then back tracking to your home town. The indigo plateau entrance is in virdian the same reason Giovanni is.
Its a simple game design, but achieves its purpose of taking a player across the pokemon world and letting them become the pokemon master.

I miss the less is more approach. That's what makes games like mario and zelda so fun is how minimal they are in population of life and explaining how the world works. The mystery is part of the fun. Have things, but you dont need a story and consant NPCs to talk to. Just go.... out and explore.

Gatehouses help make it feel more seamless. What really takes me out of the game is walking through a seemingly open area just to have a loading transition anyways. Floaroma Town, Nimbasa City and half of ORAS Hoenn did that and it kills me

Okay...? There are no loading transitions in RSE Hoenn. That's what we were getting at. It's seamless with almost no gatehouses and no load zones. It's impressive how far across the map you can go without and breaks or transitions.

The only thing that really bugged me about hoenn as a region is that you fight the elite 4 at a different place. I didn't need a 2nd region, but I had figured while playing the game I was coming to the backside of the indigo plateu or something and was curious what members of the elite 4 would be there and who would have left. The game set the standard for all new elite 4 each game. I would preferred members rotating in and out. Like koga becoming an elite 4 was interesting. Now they're all just disposable NPCs you face at the end.

Gen 1 and 2 were more like a traditional RPG where, incidentally, you could catch and battle with the normal mobs.

The main driver of them is the evil team, not collecting badges or legendaries. And legendaries were just bosses. There were no pure ghost Pokemon because the types just describes the normal mob: you wouldn't expect a pure of every element in a Final Fantasy game.

So to expand past gen 1, gen 2 was more of a sequel in the traditional sense, so had to have throwbacks to gen 1.

Only with gen 3 did it really become a franchise, instead of a series, based around the collection of the Pokemon.

They really made johto as a companion to kanto. The 8 new gyms are all based on types kanto didn't do. Though the 8 gyms plus elite 4 in kanto covered 12 types. The franchise just got to big. The anime, the other games, the toys, just everything. I would have much preferred games being more connected. I think they like squash rumors though. Routes being 101, or 201 and so on to not give hope to visiting past areas, no past characters and so on.

I just would have loved to have seen elite four stayed sort of....elite? I get that it's a different part of the world, but still people can shift. why not shift around elite 4? What if in gen 3 Agatha was there? Everyone thought she died, what if she just became an elite 4 somewhere else? What if next game has Will and Karen, but Koga and Bruno have left. Bruno could come back in gen 5, Koga in gen 6? Maybe Karen becomes a gym leader? (loldarkgym) I just found NPCs so utterly disposable. Just ideas. It's too late really.

I get the games are about the pokemon, but man does the fact this series was made by an autistic person really stick out when the people don't matter. People can get emotionally connected to fake people just like they can fake monsters.
