HGSS is way too overrated. It had shit leveling curve, only gen 2 pokemon and randomly after gym 8 you battle lugia or ho-oh, so the story was also shit.

It had no real story, but I liked lore behind Lugia and Ho-oh. You don't always need a story for the legendaries. Same with Mew/Mewtwo in R/G. Reading the diary in Red was great-

I think Ruby and Sapphire did it right . There was enough story and it never interrupted the gameplay.

Platinum is definitively gen 4 because it introduced it but IMO HGSS is also good because it has more functionality than Platinum like safari zone, pokemon walking with you, and things to keep you occupied post-Elite Four
