Charizard Y and X are good though.
Y is for "function" something that would seem good to a more mature/practical audience (well, practical and mature for ten-year-olds).
X is for "form", and exaggerates every kid's idea of what's cool about charizard.
Both serve a purpose.

I can see that. But it just looks like they were afraid to drastically change charizards design since he is one of the most loved mons in the entire series.

Both are very secure, there are even 2 forms so they dont lose any fans if one design doesnt connect with the audience.
