Makes sense, they probably weren't expecting Go to catch on as much as it did. So disabling one thing to make the game run better globally makes sense.

It doesn't matter, you would just be changing the number displayed on screen (which would be incorrect) but the server would keep sending you all zeroes.

Upgrading takes time, not just money. Also, it would make sense to wait a bit and see how the worldwide launch plays out and how many people stick with the game after the first few weeks before investing the time and money for major upgrades.
