It's really not. We just had Bewear revealed not that long ago before it. It's mostly just really bad art but it's art is really really bad for a design that really isn't that clever either. This is just a really rounded horse. At least its body parts feel like they have shape and weight for the most part. It gets kind of fucked in the mane.

A lot of those spikes are justified. Druddigon is a gargoyle cave monster type of thing, M Aerodactyl is, again, a rock type, and M Manectric is a lightning bolt.

Since the shift from sprites to models, Pokemon design has shifted from realism to cartoonish and curvy lines that look in place with the cutsie 3D overworld. Switching from 2D to 3D was inevitable, but really from a design aspect it's the worst thing to happen to the franchise

People often compared Ponyta to Keldeo, but then get called out as water types tend to be more bubbly and curvy and such, and Keldeo is a mythical which is designed partly to be cutesie

But Mudsdale and Rapidash can be directly compared - They are both horses, ground type tends to be less fanciful than fire type so the "the type tends to be all swishes and stuff" argument does not stand, and it looks like they even attempted to make it one of the more realistic Pokemon this generation

Rapidash to Mudsdale is a direct comparison that works
