Technically Mew could use any dark or bug move, where as Mewtwo can't. In the anime it showed that they were dead even so it would be up to whoever is writing the story at the time I guess. Unless they both killed each other.

As far as I'm concerned it's a retcon, the universe was actually complete with the first two games. They removed the reference the South America in it's Pokedex entry, stopped talking about it as the ancestor and instead went for some mythology shit in Gen4.

Back in Gen1&2 though, everything had already been tied up, Pokemon were descended from Mew, it was the big thing back around the time of the first movie.

There weren't even any other Pokemon Leagues prior to Gen3 either when they made them region exclusive. Remember your rival says "I am the most powerful Pokemon trainer in the WORLD" and Gen2 used the same league.

I still believe the original idea was that Pokemon were born of genetic mutations or something, the game taking place in the near future. Nowadays they don't reference the real world. Making a brand new mythology and taking it into a fantasy world is a retcon by most definitions.

This thread breeds autism. Mewtwo is so far ahead of Mew it's not even funny. I can't even understand any of this bullshit with lower defense making Mewtwo in any way worse since his HP offsets it anyways.

Mewtwo gets multiple 80 base power SE moves against Mew and has a sheer stat differential, and the extra movepool mew gets doesnt even really help in the Mewtwo match-up. Some people are making Mew "win" on a bunch of match-ups by locking Mewtwo into shitty sets designed to lose for some reason.

I'm trying to think of what Mew could even run to beat Shadow Ball/Recover/Calm Mind/Taunt. Mental Herb based sets get 2hko'd by Shadow Ball while offensive variants cant outdamage recover/calm mind, everything else just gets shut down. Strongest set I can think of so far is pray fissure hits before shadow ball kills you.

With Mewtwo being an A rank uber for 6 gens straight and Mew struggling to even stay OU these days, this is not a hard conclusion to draw.
