War horses are specifically designated for physical combat.
While Virizion uses retractable blades to fight precisely, Terrakion uses it's brute force most of the time, knocking down castles by ramming it. They have specific skills in all sorts of combat which gives them the type. A warhorse is the same way.

I'd have expected it to have Water or Fairy typing, if just in addition, because it reminds me an awful lot of the kelpie or the bäckahäst.
