I thought it had something to do with bones being buried. Of course, most animals don't bury they're dead, and those don't look like human skulls. Still, I think their like grave gaurdians or grave-robber pokemon. It also makes me thing of so-called "fossil" ivory, which isn't actually fossilized, but is just elephant or mammoth tusks that are left on or slightly in the ground after the corpse rots away.

What bothered me about that scene was how they were able to kill it with a cattle prod when it's a Ground-type. Not to mention the fact that Pokemon regularly take harsher punishment than that. When I was a kid I always thought they murdered it with Golbat or something.

Same reason why the new Moon legend isn't dark type, dark is the evil type in Japan, and the Moon isn't a symbol of evil or darkness there. Its a symbol of light, beauty, wisdom, and also sometimes cute rodents.
