ITT: Evolution lines you never understood
Golem always looked so out of place to me
This could go here I guess
Changed for the anime probably
I get Ivysaur evolving into Venusaur, but I wish Ivysaur didn't lose his confidence and energetic demeanor and turned into that fat, lazy, ugly, depressed frog.
>>27240923
It goes from a cartoon otter to a more realistic otter.
>>27240923
This one grew on me to be honest
>>27240904
Golem has Machoke's reptilian face and Machamp has Graveler's additional pair of arms. They exchange them when they get traded and evolve.
>>27240904
Graveler lost arms and won reptil head
Machoke lost reptil head and won arms
>>27240947
He's not depressed, he's just high as fuck
>>27240967
That's even worse. The energetic, confident teenager starts doing drugs and turns into a fat loser when he grows up.
>>27240904
I'd say it's to showcase how trade evolutions are like a mutation as opposed to natural growth, but Gengar, Alakazam and Machamp all don't have as drastic a design change so I have no idea.
Maybe it's yet another Kaiju/Toku reference? Gen I is full of those.
I recall even the Zubat line is based on Toku bat heroes/villains
>>27240904
Kind of gross that it randomly acquired flesh through evolution
>>27240961

/thread
Why children in 1996 understood this and not op?
>>27240961
>>27240963
oh shit
>>27240904
Think of Geodude as an egg or a shell.
There's a geokinetic lizard inside the egg/shell. As a baby, it's too weak to handle the world without its covering. When it finally reaches the final stage of its evolution, it can pop out of its shell slightly.
Geodude is a geode with a living creature instead of crystals inside.
>>27240954
>"realistic otter"
okay anon
this retarded shit
>>27241007
I'm the first post you quoted and I'd seriously doubt any kid in 1996 understood exactly what was going on with these two designs. It's an incredibly awkward transition for both sides.
Slightly off-topic but when I was a kid I thought that Aaron>Glalie>Aggron, like it was some sort of Tyranitar line rip-off
>>27241070
This, it never even occurred to me. To be honest I'm not sold 100% mostly because of Gengar and Alakazam not doing a similar thing, but then there's the only two trade evolutions in BW being the rock and the fighting ones which means maybe they former were just extras, but then Gigalith and Conkeldurr don't seem to take anything from each other, the two bugs do
>>27240923
Its not 2010 anymore anon. How are you still puzzled by Dewott's change?
>>27241099
Gengar/Alakazam kind of have a loose connection where Gengar gains weight and a tail, both of which Alakazam looses. But ehhh.
>>27240961
>>27240963
This would be fine if they worked like Karrablast and Shelmet, but they can be traded with ANY mon to evolve.
I guess that was the original idea, then.
>>27241099
>Gigalith and Conkeldurr don't seem to take anything from each other
sure they do
Conkeldurr: is inspired to drop steel girders for concrete upon seeing the magnificent pressed stone mon
Gigalith: is inspired to grow a proper face
>>27241159
Yeah... nah, sorry.
>>27241099
That's because the two bugs are required to be traded WITH EACHOTHER, while the others evolve when traded with anything, retard.
Shelmet and Karrablast are literally the only Pokémon whose evolution works like this.
>>27241061
he's fucking cool anon
>>27241184
What the fuck are you talking about?
>>27240947
Hitting a little too close to home there.
>>27241070
>>27241136
Well, it wasn't in 96, but when I was playing RBY as a kid (2000), I thought they were only able to evolve if they were traded against each other. It was obvious to me, same for my school friends, I discovered people who don't think about that by being on /vp/.
>>27240961
>>27240963
DELETE THIS NOW
>>27241049
Did you miss "more"? I didn't say it evolved into a literal otter.
>>27241205
>but then Gigalith and Conkeldurr don't seem to take anything from each other, the two bugs do
The bugs do because to evolve Shelmet, you have to trade it for a Karrablast, and for Karrablast to evolve you have to trade with a Shelmet. Every other trade evolution in any of the games, you can just trade for whatever. You can trade a Machoke for a Wigglytuff, and it's still going to evolve. You don't have to trade specifically with a Graveler.
>>27241128
Biped otter evolves into quadraped unicorn sealion-dog 3x it's size.
>>27241287
Did you totally miss the conversation or did you just feel the need to jump on any opportunity you possibly can to feel some scrap of superiority over another person on the internet?
>>27241249
>Well, it wasn't in 96
Then why are you even responding? The entire point was that Pokemon was brand-fucking-new in '96 and wasn't even close to being public knowledge. There was no really way of telling what was going on with either of their designs because the sprites all looked so fucking terrible.
>>27241339
You people are talking about trade evolutions "taking things from eachother", I'm saying it's bullshit because that's not how the trading works.
>>27241061
this
>>27241420
That makes no fucking sense to the post you replied to, which was being fucking sceptical explicitly because Karrablast and Shelmet do take features from each other but HAVE to be traded with each other, versus Gigalith and Conkeldurr being the Golem and Machamp analogs being trade evos but not taking features, with the implication being that if the Machoke/Graveler thing was either not intentional or missed/ignored for Boldore/Gurdurr and use for the bugs instead.
>>27241205
In order for karrablast and shelmet to evolve they need to be traded with each other and only each other. Golem and machoke can be traded with any pokemon and still evolve which is why the geodude line doesn't make sense
>>27241356
didn't you the read my whole post?
As I said, it was in 2000, my first experience with Pokemon, and I thought like all my schoolmates it was the only way to have them, only because of what they looked like.

Gengar gains legs.
Alakazam loses its tail.
Machamp gains a second pair of arms.
>>27241049
That's a river otter, dipshit.
I wish non-Montereyers stopped acting like they know what a sea otter is.

>>27240904
Where did Graveler's extra two arms go when he evolved?
>>27244051
Scrolled too much for this
>>27240947
Are you me? I've been saying that since Pokemon first came out and everyone since has disagreed with me. Ivysaur is so much cooler than Venusaur.
