It was a reasonable possibility for, like, the two days between when the Sun and Moon logos got leaked and when the first trailer showed Pikipek's wireframe.
Though it's undeniable that with the whole Zygarde thing Gen 7 will be more closely connected to Gen 6 than cross-generational games tend to be.
