Looking back on it, I think the genwunner mentality --or at least the end of the first "Pokemania" around the turn of the millennium-- originated from the inability to transfer Pokemon from Gen II to Gen III; completely understandable, all things considered. But with the implementation of Pokemon Bank, the soon-to-be-added ability to transfer from the original Gen I VC games to Sun and Moon, andthe massive franchise growth thanks to GO, there's next to no chance of the series dying down again that easily.
