I don't think it's popular outside of tumblr. But here are some reasons:

It's a ship that keeps Dawn away from Ash. Pokeshippers get triggered every time a new pokegirl companion gets announced, so they make up reasons why ships other than Ash+companion girl are canon.

It's the classic solitary/lonely boy + cheerful girl that helps him get better. It And it will keep happening as long as people like that kind of shit.
