The only male players that bother me are FRLG Red and ORAS Brendan. Random change in hair color isn't cool, and while it didn't really hurt Red, it made Brendan look worse.

May, Rosa, and Hilda are my darlings, but as far as protagonist power, probably Ethan/Gold. He is the only protagonist to canonically beat another, has racked up the most Gym Badges, and explored multiple regions. Granted, Kris and Lyra have done this also, but Gold did it twice. Kris and Lyra did it once, each.
