So I bought AS in preparation for Sun and Moon. I haven't played pokemon technically since Heart Gold, which I emulated.
So I went to Serbii to plan my team and it just bummed me out. They had shit to say about every pokemon of the week that wasn't blaziken.
I don't plan on competing online but it still has me feeling miserable about my team prospects.
Someone tell me it's gonna be alright. Will I do fine with pokemon I just find cute? I'm loving the looks of the pokemon in 3d and honestly for the first time I don't want to evolve any of them. I wish the assholes would let you have more than 1 file so I could do a run like that but there you go.

One last thing:
It turns out that a lot, LOT of my favorite pokemon are water types. Would I be fine with Swampert, Starmie, Azumaril, Wailord, Kyogre, and whoever the hell else?

Also god damn it swampert is cool. Mud slap is just better sand attack and muddy water is my favorite water move, even if it has less pp than surf.

You can say a pokemon is actually something else, but that doesn't make the design good. The idea of a cutesy bear that's too strong for its own good may be a good idea, but the design is still just a poorly doodled cartoon bear. Same with Exeggcute. They're seeds, sure, but they're called ExEGGcute and are clearly meant to look like eggs for no particular reason.

I like the setting, I like multiple islands, I like the human designs so far (besides the protags who are generic as fuck, but there's customization), and I like that there seems to be proper grooming instead of randomly rubbing your pokemon. Hopefully there's proper food instead of random cupcakes.

As for the Pokemon, I am extremely disappointed. So far the only design I like is Salandit and Vikavolt. Everything else either looks like it was based on a doodle made by a little kid, or is boring as fuck. The box legendaries and Tapu Koko are clusterfucks, too. Drampa and the pink bear are, without hyperbole, the worst pokemon designs I have ever seen.

I have some faith left for Gen 7, but not much. It's running very thin.

You can beat the main game with any team of your favorites. I almost always do mono type runs to make the games a little more challenging. If you go the extra mile and toss Kyogre on your team you'll be more than fine.
