The ocean riding bit will be done up until you get HM surf and your own surfing mons (Lapras will be given to you for free) and land riding will be in one or two routes.

that was one of the 'features' from the gen6 trailers. IIRC it also showed pokemon riding via GoGoat, and you only got to do that in Lumiose and on part of that one route before the town with the grass gym. There was the snow route with Mamoswine. It's gonna be route based.

I think it was changed because of the island format.
