They probably just chose Pokémon they knew would be popular. I mean all those Pokémon appeared really high in the Jap popularity poll; part of that is probably influenced by them being in the anime and not the other way around, but people have shown to not always accept things just for being advertised at them (see rusefox).

Ash should've gotten Pancham (evolved into Pangoro when training with Greninja). And as strong as Goodra is, I wish he'd have gotten Skiddo or Phantump, or brought back Bulbasaur.

The thing about Hawlucha showboating is because he's a wrestler, but he's still about battling.

Serena got the Pancham because it's still a cutemon. The thing about Ash's team and Serena's team is that Ash was given mainly the "cool" Pokemon with some that can double as cute ones. Serena was given the "cute" Pokemon and Pancham can double as cool one, especially because of the sunglasses.
