XY is boring as fuck but it's easy enough for starters/people coming back. After that, I recommend playing Platinum, HGSS, BW and/or BW2. Those games are the absolute pinnacle of the franchise, and they're significantly longer, harder and better.

I suggest grabbing Black or White. It's only the ones from that gen, and if you like it, then it'll be a good way to introduce you to everything. Also, it's the best gen imo.

Shinies are mostly random different-colored versions of normal Pokémon. They first appeared in gen 2 and are rare as all fuck. Not interesting outside of collection value or just to feel special.
Mega Evolution is a new kind of temporary (1 battle only) power up, introduced in gen 6. Only a few pokémon are capable of mega evolving. Look it up if you want to know more.

Shinies are (very rare) color variations. The Pokémon doesn't have any extra powers or anything; it just has an alternative color scheme. But they're very rare so that means they're very valuable. They started appearing in Gen II.

Mega Evolutions are supposed to be a "temporal extra evolution stage" that can only be activated during battles. Only one Pokémon per battle can mega evolve. The stats, abilities, and sometimes even the types of the Pokémon change during Mega Evolution. They're the new feature from Gen VI.

Gen VII will probably add a new feature as well. Some anon posted a theory about a 5th movement that could be used once per battle, and many others believe that there will be a fusion between Pokémon and trainers.

A shiny is like a regular pokemon, except it has a different color palette. They were introduced in Gen 2, and they've anywhere from a 1/8192~ chance of appearing to a significantly better chance in later games.

Mega evolution is something introduced in XY, and it's basically an added evolution form for certain pokemon that lasts only the duration of the fight.

B2W2 are direct sequels to BW. So, if you want to experience the full story (that you should, it's probably the best one in the series so far) play BW and then B2W2. You even get a couple of bonuses.

Yes, you'd need two systems. Not really important, they mostly serve to tie the stories together a little more, give bonus boss battles and some bonus Pokémon that used to belong to a character in BW that are guaranteed to be stronger than a version of them you'd find randomly running around.
