Technically it hasn't, there are only three instances of Fire/Fighting being used as a type combination throughout the entire series. The combination hasn't been used to death at all, it's just people don't like the fact that it was used three times in a row.

There have been three Fire/Fighting starters IN A ROW. With Chesnaught being Grass/Fighting that's four starters in a row with the Fighting-type.

Having four of the seven Fire-type starters be Fighting-type, with five Fighting-type starters in a row, is not an okay thing to do.
