PSMD download: http://pastebin.com/uR5bKJkw (NOTE: The English upload is down for the time being, and I don't have a spare on hand since I didn't upload that.)

Check the guides at >>>/vg/hbg if you don't know how to install the game. You won't lose any online feature or anything doing so, don't worry. You will be able to do everything that you'd normally be able to and much more.

REMINDER: If you need a rescue, post your region. Due to a few things that make no sense, rescues are region locked. It's shitty, but be sure to mention if you're European or American. If you use the .cia in this post, your region should be listed as American.

Is Wiiware's tower system supposed to be a prototype to the combo attacks in Super or something? They feel really weird to use.
>switch leaders from half health Poochyena to Electrike
>he jumps on Electrike's head immediately afterwards and forms a tower
It's better than the old Run Away system, at least
>>
>>27088238
How do you switch leaders in that? Is it in a menu?
>>
>>27088319
I'm using the GC controller, so I tap the C-Stick to switch leaders. For Classic Controllers, I'd assume it'd be the right analog stick. Dunno about any other controller's button combo, but I'll read through the control menus if you want me to.
>>
>>27088390
>For Classic Controllers, I'd assume it'd be the right analog stick.
It's + if I remember correctly.
>>
>>27088463
Yeah, just checked. C-Stick for GC, 1 for Nunchuck, + for Classic, and Start for the DS systems.
Everything else is pretty much the standard control scheme unless you're using the Nunchuck which is a bit weird at times.
>>
>>27088525
Start on the DS? I'll probably use that then, since i'd think it controls like the other games that way

Evolution happens in Wiiware right when you meet the requirements for it. It asks you for a prompt beforehand, and after evolving will then ask if you want to give it a nickname, though I'd assume that option doesn't show up if it already has one, like in Sky.
The IQ skill "しんかしない" (Don't Evolve) is the first in the IQ skill list and prevents the prompt from showing up at all when enabled.
>>
>>27089336
Is that the one that's unchecked from the beginning? How big is the stat increase, if any? Is there an item like Gummis and Vitamins that boost stats?
>>
>>27089374
Haven't exactly looked at Shinx's stats specifically before he evolved, but both of his offensive stats were in the 30s range at level 14, and now they're both 43. Can't say for certain how big the increase is, but it does exist.
Because Spinda's Cafe is no longer a thing, Gummis are far less reliable when it comes to stat boosting, since they only give a slight chance of boosting in dungeons, like when using them in Sky's dungeons. Still have no luck finding any stat boosters; only on the 5th dungeon. As of right now, everyone on my team but Luxio's not so great right now stat-wise.

I did find the TM for Wide Slash in the 5th dungeon though, it's called "すいへいぎり".
>>
Still going through Wiiware PMD, just unlocked the chocolate dungeon, and used a password to get the shiny Hoppip. Her Belly stat is doubled, which is pretty nice.
Most of the problems I've been facing were with tower enemies, but throwing sticks and Geo Pebbles/Gravelerocks forces them to seperate and damages both of the tower enemies, making things a lot easier.

You're right. He's not strong physically, but he is brave. He also has the "why does this have to happen to me" thing going on and that's always a fun trait to give a character.

Both of them were there when it mattered.
>>
>>27095547
Meanwhile Mawile could solo every motherfucker on the planet with both her arms tied behind her mouth yet spends all day sitting around reading books.

And who isn't brave? This isn't Explorers of Sky, most everyone seemed ready to give their lives by the end.

Do you mean just the epilogue? It depends on who you play as. I heard Fennekin has a tough time in Sand Dune, but Chespin has no problem.

On the whole, I don't think so. For me, it's not so much that one game's post-game was easy, but that Rescue Team's was actually difficult. All the other games get super boring but Rescue Team remains tough and I still haven't even beaten the post-game story.

Are Bittercold rehashes going to be a series staple? Dialga being the final boss because he got corrupted due to time stopping was pretty unique compared to Gates and Super's crap

Super probably only did it because Gates did., I doubt it's gonna be a series thing.

Now I am done with SPMD's story and my life is empty once more. I don't know how they did it, but after 20 hours of "meh":ing, that ending and post-game broke down my defenses.

Bravo, Chunsoft, I know literally every reviewer on the planet hates your guts but please don't let the franchise end.

>>27101195
Super felt more or less like a homage to the previous games, the first half being like rescue team in that you mostly just hang around a village and save those in need, the second half being like explorers in that you join an elite society and go on expeditions, and the end is basically just bittercold again. Then it finally does its own thing for the far too short but oh so excellent post-game
>>
>>27102215
Hopefully they don't listen to western reviewers.
>>
>>27102215
Yeah, I saw it like that as well, but given the tagline "definitive PMD experience" I wasn't expecting anything else. The scenarios had similar structures but they were different enough in my eyes.

Sales have been tanking pretty hard. RT was around 7 mil, Explorers around 10 mil, then GTI dropped to 1 mil and it looks as if SMD isn't even going to beat that.

Now that the phone garbage is an unparalleled success we can always hope for a visual novel android exclusive.

One thing bothers me. Did anyone else notice how your partner's reaction was rather... Subdued in the Purification Cave? And didn't really act like him/herself? Meanwhile Mew was still acting like usual, I.E. exactly like your partner used to (MC even comments on this) before going back to the jungle.

Is your partner even the same person anymore? Being brought back from literal non-existence seems pretty far-fetched even by PMD standards.
>>
>>27103021
>Being brought back from literal non-existence seems pretty far-fetched even by PMD standards.
The Explorers MC went through the same thing. I just assumed it was because it was a tiring ordeal since the partner was lying on the ground for the whole thing IIRC. I thought they pepped back up when they returned to HQ.

And the 3DS, despite being the best selling console of this gen, is the worst selling portable Nintendo console if you exclude the Virtual Boy. On the other hand, the DS is one of the best selling videogame consoles ever. Actually, the best selling one if you count the 3DS. You could say the GBA is if you go by this logic, but GBA games aren't as easily accessible as DS games are.

I asked you first but whatever. For Super:
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/nintendo-reports-revenue-decline-and-expects-wii-u/1100-6439250/

>In terms of key performers for the reported financial year, Nintendo highlighted Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer and Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon, which sold 3.4 million and 1.2 million units respectively on the 3DS.

I don't have anything for the DS games (since VGChartz a shit), but you seem to forget that Rescue Team is two games and Explorers is three. Also, they've been out for years (Rescue Team is 10 years old).

Drifblim has an overpowered ability that lets them attack twice provided they're not holding an item, and their Level 1 moveset includes Astonish, which has STAB and has a chance of flinching, and Minimize, raising Evasion to avoid getting killed.
Smoochum's also a good choice, since she has Forewarn, evading attacks sometimes, and has access to Powder Snow and Sweet Kiss.

Compared to those two, Poochyena's a really poor choice, starting with only Tackle and doesn't get much useful moves, and his stats don't make up for it.

Looks hideous. But more importantly, the Mystery Dungeon subtitle makes it seems like just another spinoff series while Pokéden almost puts it on the same level as the main series.

Which it is, I mean that's where they revealed Lucario, it got its own anime series, you're not seeing that shit in Rangers.
>>
>>27118925
The kana you posted reads as Pokedan, not Pokeden. It should then become Pokedun, because Dungeon's just spelt as Danjyon in Japan, and it just combined the first parts of Pokemon and Dungeon.
Team Pokepals (the default team name in Explorers)'s Japanese name is also Pokedans.

Either way, why does this matter to you, though?
>>
>>27119145

Rangers tries to be canon with the games, so you get Rangers specials in the main anime instead.

Well, it is a spinoff. If anything it's MD that's its own series.
It's just that PMD has been as consistent as the main series since the first game.

Well, you probably should put an attack on him, so he can properly defend himself. If you don't want vague answers you should give us more info. Are you running smeargle solo, or do you have teammates? What game is this for, so we know what moves are available?
Perish song is normal type right? So it shouldn't affect ghosts. It also hits everyone including the leader and teamates doesn't it? You should probably consider switching that out for something less suicidal, unless you wanted it for a specific purpose. The suicidal aspect might not be an issue, though, if you have a teamate with heal bell or something similar.
I'm fond of health draining moves myself, and always put them on my team members if I can, so you could try one of those. Being able to attack and heal at the same time is always nice.
You could try a move that can cause a status effect like paralysis or sleep.
There really isn't really a specific right answer that can be given, so you'll probably only really get vague answers.

I have transform on it, so I thought it was clear I'm just using it to have fun. Either that or something that's really OP like lock on paired with perish song. Haha, holy shit.

>>27128422
I'd say Gates is better than RT in the gameplay department. Even though Gates was kinda simple, RT was a little rough around the edges since Explorers is such an improvement by comparison. And I don't really agree with the story ranking (I don't really have a solid ranking myself, just that RT is the least best), but it's a respectable ranking nonetheless.

You did good, anon.
>>
>>27128569
Thinking about it, I'd agree with you on the Gates and RT gameplay thing. The move selection on the DS games, taking a lot longer to get the team mates you want from the friend areas as opposed to a simple menu, only having a bag space of 20 and the assness of having pokemon with only a chance of recruiting were pretty big drawbacks.

Gates's gameplay took a kick to the face in terms of content, but what was there was still pretty smooth (aside from only one mission at a time, that was inexcusable), and paradise was fun working with.

I went through the soundtrack and noticed that they had named the track for Mystery Jungle as Purifying Cave and vice versa. Shrugged it off at first but then I started thinking.

Maybe they screwed up? Why does a regular stroll through the forest have this bombastic epic final dungeon song while the biggest climax in the game has this sort of somber, quiet music? I think the programmers misread the compser's notes and switched them up.

Gates' story is only good because all the highlights come early on. After the amazing twist it's just boredom while Super does the opposite, which despite its flaws leads to a far more reasonable buildup and conclusion. I mean Gates basically just goes "What, save the world? Yeah I guess we mentioned that at the start" and make up some shit about bittercold. >>
>>27139227
I thought Gates had the best story since it was the only one to make a group of characters that I cared about. Explorers's cast was weak outside of the episodes and while I like the school kids in Super, they end up vanishing from the story entirely at roughly a third of the way in.
>>
>>27141927
Super focuses on quality instead of quantity, no character in Gates even comes close to the complexity of your partner, espurr etc. And they achieved it during the story's natural progression without giving them their own dedicated episodes.
>>
So has anyone else done the Chatot quest pm Sunny Spot Hill?

>>
>>27141979
The partner may have easily been the most developed character in the entire series, but it came at the expense of his likeability. Besides, a lot of the development felt a bit off aside from learning to not be so afraid of ghosts. Revelations come right out of the blue The whole accepting Dark Matter thing was by far the worst offender of this and I felt it was more the story adapting to the partner rather than the partner adapting to the story.

As petty as it seems, Super's entire story fell apart on the premise that I just never liked the partner's personality. Being the sole main character, the story lives and dies by him, and for me, it died. Still, the stretch between Escaping the voidlands up to the prehistoric ruins was excellent for the partner.

I didn't like the partner too much either, but the ending sequence and post-game is easily the hypest I've ever felt playing these games because it felt like you were actually struggling to accomplish something you wanted to accomplish, instead of just being tugged along.

Am I making myself clear? As in, you don't even need to do the post-game, but you do it anyway because you're that damn invested in what the hell's going on and you want to save your partner.

>>
>>27142211
I'm not disagreeing with that, the parts from Voidlands to finish were pretty damn hype, but come Primeval forest, it went by way too fast for a lot of it so sink in, with a lot of exposition dumps. The ending scene especially was horrendous for this, and when the story ended on such a spectacular shit note, it really soured my views on Super's story.

Super's highs were the highest of the entire series, but its lows were the lowest. Compare that to Explorers, which was just a flat decent from start to finish, picking up when the dead future comes in.
>>
>>27142251
Read a fanfiction like that once
>>
>>27142305
>Ancient soldiers fighting pokemon with armour and swords.
That's actually kind of cool in a really cheesy way.
>>
>>27142287
I think keeping all the exposition for the end scene worked in it's favor, if they had gradually built up you-know-who as a bigger character then it would've been obvious who it was. It felt like a passing remark which came back to haunt you, like when they talk about Lucario in the first game which amounts to exactly nothing.

SMD's ending is shocking, unpredictable and surprisingly cruel. I mean, the credits roll over the main character collapsed on the ground in complete despair. It's so brilliant, you can't take issue with that, you just can't.

And I doubt you can get lower than Gates post-twist. The writer realized that, oh shit, we're 90% through the game and have yet to establish a villain and you get this long weird exposition dump by the fireplace. Whatever Super did, there were still stakes, characters you like were basically stuck in hell, the villains are about to get away with everything and you wanted to win and save the day. In Gates I couldn't care less because it never felt like anybody was ever in any real danger.
>>
>>27142392
The main problem with an exposition dump ending is that it never gave me a chance to really feel anything other than 'huh?'

The shocking, unpredictable and surprisingly cruel thing about Super's ending was how spectacularly it failed for me. The twists were either poorly used, poorly explained, or just straight up bullshit. Mew who? The partner might as well have been a resurrected turnip from Saturm and it'd have the same effect since we knew absolutely nothing about Mew. By the logic of the partner disappearing, shouldn't everyone also disappear to since negativity's part of everyone? Might have missed something, but the explanation was really weak. Also, the amnesia twist was inexcusably horrible. We had a pretty great one explaining how Nuzleaf gave you amnesia so you'd trust him and break the barrier, but nope, that didn't happen! Instead you CHOSE to get amnesia because...remembering your past mistakes somehow makes you make the same mistakes again. It's so damn counter logic.

The ending with the player character crying also showed me why the ending just works better with the player vanishing. I liked that they tried something different, but, assuming that the player character is a stand-in for the player, having him act in a way that's vastly different to how I'd feel was really jarring (Super's story would have worked much better if the PC was its own character instead of a player-stand in). Especially in the epilogue where in the PC's mind, he was risking Dark Matter's return. That probably makes him the most villainous character in the game aside from Dark Matter.

>>
>>27145529
I agree with you there. I think the recruitment and the motivation/absent pokemon system gave a satisfying sense of progression and a good incentive to use a variety of pokemon respectively. The old recruitment system was pretty garbage and while the IQ system is good in theory, it takes way too long to get just one pokemon's IQ up.

Super is easily the best PMD for me, in spite of the story being a failure, in spite of its great moments here and there.

Probably a dumb question, but in Sky's Adventure Log, the first point lists Pokemon that joined your team. Does that mean total Pokemon, or does it only count different species? Kinda lost count on who's on my team, but I know there's some doubles.
>>
>>27147369
This was a plothole I never got.

Would have also helped the player character have a bit more of a presence. I think having the partner be the main character was actually a good idea since it's easier to characterise a character who's not a player stand-in, but the player character has less impact than half of the side cast. It's bizarre to see a character with the most screen time having such little impact in the story
>>
>>27148464
What plothole? Mew's the legendary, the MC was literally just a regular-ass human. They probably couldn't even communicate and he sure as hell didn't have any special abilities. That's why she made him into a Pokémon, so he wouldn't suck so hard.

>>
>>27148464

Yeah, I agree. Being the Super MC sucked. Even as a bland self-insert, everything they did was so against what I would've done that they might as well have been an entirely different character. The only time I ever felt in sync with them was telling the partner that they were annoying.

>>27149207
Same here. I think Super's story as a whole would have been better if they made the player character their own character with distinct personality and characteristics instead of trying to be a player stand-in while also acting in a particular way. Ends up getting the worst of both worlds.

In hind sight, I think the exposition dump scene at Primeval Forest was a big missed opportunity. We could have actually seen what happened back there since Celebi can time travel instead of just being told about it. Would have also made the whole Resurrection stuff actually matter

I'm a masochist, I just like whichever has me dying more often. Fuck those dungeons which pairs you up with like 5 overpowered allies though, what I really is want a game where they drop the partner altogether like in the post-game

I like IQ and killing shit with the standard A attack and not being expected to use items all the time.

I want to get some Mystery dungeon.

Skyfags say to get Sky. SMD is allegedly alright. Is this true?

Should I play Sky before SMD? I have never played any MD game.
>>
>>27163449
Sky is treated like the second coming of Christ for some reason.

Get Super, it's got much better gameplay.
>>
>>27163449
Honestly you can flip a coin, you can't go wrong with either. Sky is easily emulated but I liked Super more. You don't have to play one before the other. They're all at least good, you should play the one you don't play after you finish whichever one you choose.
>>
>>27163449
Get super, mate. It's fantastic.
>>
>>27163449
Best gameplay in the series, but the worst story. Gates is the reverse of this. Sky is in the middle. Rescue Team isn't bad, but Sky's better in every meaningful way.
>>
The only mystery dungeon game I've played was Red Rescue Team, where do I start if I wan't a new one to play?
>>
>>27163449
Sky has a slightly better story.
Super surpasses it in everything else.
>>
>>27163606
Super
>>
>>27163449
Sky, then Super. Super fixes absolutely everything wrong with Sky, from being able to cheese bosses with status effects to items being bloat.

The stories are equally good for different reasons, but Sky's might come off as a bit lacking if you don't play that first.
>>
>>27163449
Play Blue Rescue Team first.
Then play Explorers of Sky.
Then play Super.
>>
>>27163932
I don't think Rescue Team holds up that well, I really shouldn't recommend it to someone when the other two options are basically the same but much better.
>>
>>27163972
I think it's still good enough to be recommended, despite not having Sky's improvements. It's not going to take them much to play it as well, particularly if they don't complete the postgame.
>>
>>27164053
But why? What's there to see or do? The best part of the story returns in Sky, sort of wish I had started there so the ending would've got me even harder.
>>
>>27141624
It will be as predictable as they always are.

>What's there to see or do?
Mainly the postgame. The story is also different from Explorers/GtI/Super and I hope the next game doesn't try to be Explorers again.

>The best part of the story returns in Sky
The fugitives part? Not really.

>sort of wish I had started there so the ending would've got me even harder
Oh, so you mean the ending. Well it's executed better in Explorers, I can see where you're coming with it, but I'd say it still has some problems. Like Dialga being able to do that, or that they wait for a few months.
Even then, it would still be personal preference. Ignoring the common points all games have, Explorers still has a lot of new stuff, particularly if you compare it to RT rather than GtI/Super.
Again, both GtI and Super are nice and the "let's copy explorers!" thing doesn't really feel wrong in them, but I wish they would do something different for the next game.

Blue Rescue Team is refreshingly simple and doesn't have slight lag when moving tiles when there are a lot of enemies on the floor. And it doesn't have a shitton of black screens when you go where you need to go (travelling through the guild EVERY DAY is a pain in the ass). It just feels more polished, if more simple.

If that's Red/Blue Rescue Team, I feel you. All of those Pokemon can only be found in/obtained by 99F dungeons. Purity Forest for Celebi, Wish Cave for Jirachi (and you don't get to bring a Wish Stone if you're recruiting), and Joyous Tower for Chansey and all the others (you can only get Eevee in there which you need for Espeon). On top of that, your level gets reset which makes those dungeons even more of a pain in the ass to clear/recruit in.

I recruited Jirachi and Celebi before I got Mew but I gave up on Joyous Tower because you have to go in SO MANY TIMES to get everything.
>>
>>27169431
I really miss this from the DS games. Trying to decide whether to save PP with a weak, but usable basic attack or whether to use a move to help make sure an enemy dies was always one of the more interesting choices to make when going through dungeons.
>>
>>27169628
Dungeons are shorter and elixirs more frequent so PP isn't really an issue.

Survival is though and even if normal attacks did 15 damage you'd be a complete arse using that ever.
>>
>>27170109
Normal attacks should be at least somewhat usable. I'm not asking for 300+ damage mind you, i'm asking for something reasonable.

What program are you using to make these? I always loved Northern Desert, and I have heard many renditions, but yours is the only one that seems to have kept what are basically the same sounds as the original, minus that Explorers-patented funky synth bass. I have to say that you did a great job.
As for the piano piece, I'm not sure what you're going for, but it seems like a nice melody. Final Fantasy-esque, or maybe a relaxing town theme in Pokemon.
Are you planning on making another in the future?

I went Charmander/Chikorita, and if nothing else, Chikorita's expressions are absolutely adorable.

I've heard Pikachu actually makes for a very good partner character-wise, though I'm still a little leery on how an entire species can match a personality.

Blue/Red, but even then you can play as anyone after the credits roll. The starter you used before that though gets a nice looking house modeled after their head.
