Well, there is ORAS, the fact they have megas, and that blaziken has been pushed for a long time, getting a mega in XY, and mudkip has been cemented into peoples' conscious due to memes.

A lot went right. Even if you don't like the designs, it's hard to argue with the fact that they're a pretty well-rounded and useful group of starters where all three options are decently effective. Even the gameplay 'weak link', Sceptile, is still pretty competent compared to the average starter in most other generations. Especially in Emerald.

It felt like a severe downgrade from the Gen 1 & 2 starters except for Grovyle, to me.

It was the first time I had trouble choosing a starter because I didn't particularly want either Treecko, Torchic or Mudkip.
