More km seems to mean rarer pokemon, both 2 kilometers one I hatched were Rattata, both 5 km ones I hatched were a Voltorb and Oddish

Lower CP pokemon you catch are cheaper to power up. Also be sure to check their moves, sometimes they have a more powerful set than a higher CP 'mon you pick up.

No matter what CP it has though, they all only give you 1 candy when transferred though.

Any ideas on what the formula is for catching rarer/higher level/evolution pokemon? I caught a haunter last night eating mexican. 3 other people at the table were playing, they all saw haunter as well. Maybe he "spawns" there every few hours, and if you're there, you can catch it? People are catching incredibly strong pokemon, but the best I've seen is a haunter/dratini. Does it have to do with trainer level? Items? 10km eggs? Any ways to increase odds of seeing better mons?

I find dratini all around my area. Lots of ponds, forest, and swamp. Bugs are constantly spawning across the street. A 1 hour walk nets me 6 stops and 2 gyms. Bretty gr8 m8. Chicago suburbs turned out well.

Pokemon spawn around different points on the map and you need to physically carry your phone to those spots to encounter them.

When you catch pokemon, it gives you stardust and candies specific to that evolutionary line. You need both to level up your pokemon and increase its CP (combat power), and need a large amount of candies to evolve it.

Higher CP pokemon are more powerful in gym battles, and if you take over a gym and defend it you get loads of swag for that time until someone knocks you off.

stardust is a universal leveling component
candy is a species-specific leveling component

to level, you need a decent pile of stardust and one candy

to evolve, you need zero stardust but a large pile of candy

catch multiples of the same pokemon that you're trying to evolve and level. transfer (release) all your weak extras in order to farm stardust and candy, then evolve first followed by leveling. when you evolve a pokeman it also gains a bunch of levels, so it's better to just add the levels to the final product

you sorta battle

your pokemon has a basic attack (bite, tackle, scratch, etc.) and then something else (aerial ace, hyper bite, drill run, etc.)

battles happen in real time. tap to use the basic attack and use a long touch to use the secondary attack (it has kind of a stamina bar system for recharging) or swipe to the side to dodge an incoming attack

generally you can punch 20-50 CP above your own weight by tapping like a spazz since the gym pokemans you fight will be on autopilot. it seems you can bring some boys with you and gangbang the gym pokemon (this morning some stranger and I were attacking at the same time and I could see his polywrath next to my fearow while we fought beedrill)

it's not too bad, most of the gameplay is travelling around and hunting so I don't mind the simplified battle system. I only want to be able to battle people at any time without being limited to gym pokemon

there are a lot of factors that I haven't quite worked out yet, if anything I know that when your level increases the pokemon CP increases and high CP = difficult to catch but my results have been all over the board

I caught a 141 CP oddish with a single ball and a 175 CP pidgeotto at the same level took 2 balls

I evolved Kakuna into Beedrill today. Not only the CP went up like nothing, even the power-ups only give +21-22CP. Am I just extremely unlucky or does this happen to every Beedrill?

Max out the lower evolution before you evolve. When you evolve the CP is multiplied by like 1.9x so low cp = low gain, high cp = high gain when evolving.
