In your items page you can see a coin icon. Click that. Every gym you have grants you coins every 20 hours. Coins buy you shit like pokeballs and incubators, which become harder to come by as you level up and challange harder monsters.

In Niantic's other game, Ingress, the game revolved around going to portals and hacking for items (like pokestops) and taking them over for your team (like gyms).

They just used the portals for these locations in Pokemon Go. Having a familiartiy with Ingress is helping in this game.

You have to level up the gym to add more slots. To level it up you defeat the current pokemon there with your own. They call it training. Once it has leveled up there will appear an icon that let's you assign a pokemon to it.

No, you can't lock the phone. It has to be open and the have the app open on the screen.

If your phone has no gyroscope then the power saver won't work. It's kind of useless anyway unless you have an OLED screen where it actually turns off the pixels.

It's not like it's stealing since the app is free and it's not like you're cheating either. They're probably annoyed that their servers are getting rammed from people all trying to play it at once but it just seems stupid to me that they would think "Aaaah fuck you for being excited to play our game, here's a ban!"

Just got back from a two hour walk downtown. I'm loaded up on Potions, Revives, Eggs, and PokeBalls from all the Pokestops. I caught about two dozen Pokemon, nothing special though. I captured two gyms for myself, defeating the blue team dude that had captured both of them, he left pidgeys in both of them lol. Stopped at a tiny restaurant for lunch. On the walk home the game became unresponsive and my phone started to get hot so I switched it off. Tried logging in from my apartment and the servers are experiencing issues apparently.

Meh, not bad for day two. I still have the rest of the day to play more too.
