If Venusaur wants to run EQ it has to give up one of it's STAB's, Synthesis or HP Fire. None of which are really ideal. Even if Salandit doesn't end up being a hard counter, it's presence (if it ends up decent) will still make Venusaur less viable.

Sure, but one more counter really doesn't make the world. And while Earthquake might not be as ideal as HP Fire it's in no way a niche move, as it also allows Venusaur to beat Heatran.
