I met a QT playing go while on my walk, was with her bf though, told them I just got lvl 5 and was going to take down the gyms nearby, they were supprised I was lvl 5 already. told them both to join blue team. I used incense on the bus and caught a bunch of new Pokemon so driving with incense might work for you.

Also do trick shots when throwing Pokeballs for a little exp.
