You're probably never really going to get an acknowledgement of him having done 5 fucking major region leagues and a number of other side shit. The boat sailed on that long ago. But it'd be nice if there was a sense of other trainers having a similar history.

I like that though. Feels more like a rivalry now instead of friends. Things got awkward because Ash wanted to prove that Shota wasn't actually better than him even though he beat him but then still lost to Wulfric. Ash was almost jealous of Shota. Ash got knocked off his pedestal and Shota realized that Ash isn't as great as he thought/hoped he was.

Writers will surely bring Ash's pride to the surface.

I think Ash will act like a dick in the 1st half, putting his pride as a trainer over his passion for battling and pretty much fighting desperately to defend his honour. He'd make a very lousy performance because of that. Then Shouta gets enough of this and start to call him out for his bullshit. Ash gets enraged and 1st. Ep finishes.

Then in 2nd episode Ash spits out his reasons to desperately win against him and is about to grab Shouta by the neck when either Serena slaps him or Pikachu thunderbolts him and lectures him about humility. Then Ash makes a miraculous comeback and halfheartedly accepts Shouta surpassed him but he makes sure he still has to learn about battles not being just about making prefabricated strategies. Ash barely wins.

Sinnoh league only had 64 competitors too. It makes a lot of sense, it shows how difficult it is to get 8 badges and how only the best trainers make it into the league.

Really makes you realize how many trainers quit or give up. We saw this with the guy in the recent episode, with Casey in Johto, the two other Kanto trainers who left Pallet at the same time as Ash and Gary....Gary himself flat out quit after Johto, etc.
