Also, on a scale of 1-10, how badly do I need to play the Etrian Odyssey games in order of release? Are they story-contiguous so that they need to be played in order, or could I just start at any game in the series?

You can start at any game, since the stories are incredibly self-contained with only references to the other games at most.

EO4 is the best to start for beginners, since it's the easiest. Afterwards, check out the Untold games and then EO3. Play the original EO1 and EO2 if you feel like it, but you might not enjoy how slow they are compared to the newer ones.

Avoid Etrian Mystery Dungeon.
