Have you ever seen a horror movie? Something with some real fuckin' nasty monster designs in it? Those things were designed to be horrible and shocking. They aren't pretty. But they succeed at their goal, so it's a good design.

If something is designed to be ugly and represent a certain thing, and it ends up being an ugly and effective representation of that thing, it's a good design.

Design isn't just about making things visually appealing. It's about getting a point across.

I hear this opinion a lot on here, but after going through and looking at all the designs again, honestly gen vi might just have theworst ratio of good to bad designs in the franchise.
Not a single starter final evo looks good imo. Chesnaught is decent, but the color scheme is offputting, the shell looks bad, and he looks too top heavy to move properly. Greninja had potential, but the tongue scarf and random dark typing ruined him for me. I don't think I need to even bring up Delphox.
Betond that though there are very few memorable designs. Noivern is cool, but the dragon typing makes no sense.
Now Gen V gets a lot of flack for bad designs, and it's well deserved. Gen V has, hands down the worst designs in the franchise. But lost in this there are some really good stand out designs. Gen VI has very few stand out good designs, it's bad designs are just less bad then Gen V's bad designs.

Noibern does somewaht resemble a dragon, but its not the first typing that comes to mind. Noibat on the otherhand looks more like a dark/flying type or psychic/flying type. And thats my problem with a lot of gen vi designs, the typing is not immediately obvious just by looking at the design.

People overract about Gen 5. I'll have to admit that it has a lot of bad designs, but by simple virtue of being the largest generations it manages to have a lot of cool Pokemon as well. Even if you think that half of the Unova Pokemon are shit, that still leaves you with more Pokemon than Kalos has introduced as a whole.

I could easily tell that Chesnaught was some kind of armadillo knight, especially since I played Shining Force. I could not tell that Goodra is made of goo by just looking at it, and without knowing its prior evos. In fact I wasn't sure if it's still fluid when I saw it.
