Is he overrated? I genuinely like him.

Thread will become a shitstorm between Haunterfags and Gengarfags.

Yes it is.
Haunterfag here, I definitely understand where the love of Gengar comes from, and I loved it as a kid in RBY and GSC, but I felt genuinely disgusted by its FRLG sprite and any depiction of it going on. It's a fucking grinning spiky blob, not a shadow/ghost anymore. The only way Gengar should be is edgy, it's one of the very, very few cases where edgy is good.
At least the Mega is god tier.

I'm a fan of gengar and I see it the exact opposite. I like the spiky grinning blob design, and don't really like the depictions of it where it's overly edgy. Not too big a fan of the mega evolution either.

I like mine to be proud of its power

He's not overrated as he used to be.

I never really understood why Gengar gets as much love as he does. He's a cool guy, but didn't really stand out to me at all when I first played Red/Blue.
His design is kind of nothing. I know he's supposed to be a doppelganger (doppelGENGAR) of Clefable, but because they chose Clafable as Gengar's base it's got a pretty indistinct blob shape. Clefable is after all just a soft, blobby, generically monstrous design as well.
I guess he is popular because he has been strong in battle in every generation, and was the only Ghost type at first, and the only good Ghost type for a while. I wonder how popular Gengar would be if he was introduced alongside Chandelure in Gen I.
