One of the most uninspired designs in the franchise is one of the most beloved pokemon in the franchise. Being a model for genwunners(ignorant assholes that wear their nostalgia googles tight) doesn't help either. If Charizard lacked the glory treatment it gets in comparison with other better designed starter,fire, and dragon pokemon I probably would like it a bit more.

Charizard is a fine pokemon, one of the better ones even, but Pokemon won't ever let you forget he's popular. There is an over-saturation of charizard that makes it hard to both like him, and assert your individuality.

Charizard is also the poster-child of genwunners, and is frequently spouted as the best designed pokemon of all by newer recruits.

The icing on the cake is Charizard's following with young boys, spawning the "My little brothers Charizard has Flamethrower, Fire Blast, Fire Spin, and Cut for coverage" meme.

I really wish Y-Zard was the normal Zard design. It looks like an actually sleek wyvern thing instead of the most boring dragon I've ever seen. I personally have nothing against Charizard. When I was a kid he was the coolest thing ever.

But as an adult, and over 600 some Pokemon later, it's not the best thing ever. There's certainly been better designs since. I do get why people get annoyed by it. Genwunners fawn over it. It gets most special treatment than Pikachu. I honestly get bothered by Mewtwo for the exact same reasons.

That being said, the anti-Charizard people are just as fucking annoying. Love people who call it fat but then praise Blastoise. People call the design uninspired, but it's literally one of the first Pokemon ever designed. A lot Gen 1 was that way. Doesn't mean it's badly designed. I do think plenty of people get so angry about it just because it is popular and try to go out of their way to hate it.

So basically, you want me to choose a favorite that isn't as popular so that I can be a special snowflake? Who cares what other kids liked? Charizard has tons of meaning to me.

My first starter went along with my love of dragons. I'm a martial artist, and learned at a young age about the power and confidence of dragons in myth. I was (and still kind of am) a hothead, so I always gelled with Fire as an element, and Charmander was the natural choice for me. My dad even surprised me with the Red version *specifically* when we couldn't find the game during the original Pokemon hype because he knew those things about me. It's kind of how I was raised.

In the anime, his standoffish BS really mirrors my own edgy crap as a teenager. Nice, timid kid gets stronger and toughens up but is a total shit about it, eventually gets over himself and becomes a loyal bro. Shit was my "coming of age" to a T.

My friends all know/knew that Charizard was my ace, and agreed that it suited me. Everyone knew that I just "fit" with Charizard and questioned any time I benched him to try out other 'mon. Hell, when Charizard X was first announced, we all thought it was perfect that his color scheme matched the colors I use in my own business and am usually sporting: black and blue.

It may sound corny, but so is that shit about Gyarados "representing the ascension of the underdog" or Marowak "overcoming past and tribulations."

Charizard is just my favorite Pokemon, Anon. I don't see why that's such a fucking problem for people.

I personally have no problem with Charizard other than the fact it gets shilled to death. I like it, and I typically chose it whenever I replay Kanto games, but GF loves to shove it down everyone's throat
