The Gen 3 ones are. I think Gen 4's are worst competitively, but make up for it in design, and are both pretty good in their tier. Gen 3's are almost just as bad, and are incredibly boring, although Cradily is pretty cool.

I believe that. Personally, in my opinion, all of the fossils bar Rampardos had Rock added because of the fossil, and either were pure their other type or had some other in combination. Like, Omastar was probably pure Water, while Aerodactyl might have been Dragon/Flying. Armaldo and Cradily might have been Water/Bug and Water/Grass, respectively.

And Rampardos was just a Rock-type from the get-go.

Near enough every fossilmon is based tbqh. Aurorus is fucking ugly as shit though.

Competitively they're certainly on the lower end. Designwise they're cool enough and you'll need to have Bastiodon along with Tyrantrum to form the iconic ceratops tyrannosaur duo for a dinosaur-based team. I never cared much for either but after I started using Bastiodon for this exact reason, and having bred one with Fissure for Battle Spot use it's been pretty nifty.

Kabutops is a rain team staple. Armaldo is shit in regular play, but it's excellent in Monotype since it's a bug type spinner with a decent defensive typing and some offensive capacity. Bastiodon is ireedemably bad though, yeah. Sturdy + Metal Burst is all it can hope to do, maybe some Pebbles + Phazing bullshit but that's it.

They have probably the most fluid theme of all fossil mons, which is a nice touch, one that carries over not just design-wise but into stats as well. I don't think you can shit on any Pokemon for its competitive viability these days, considering we're now in a meta where there're Pokemon with Rampardos's immediate attack and like double his speed, plus most fossilmon are low-tier anyway. That being said, Bastiodon is fucking ass to play with. It is one of the least fun things to use in the meta. It just sits there and shits out stealth rocks and takes hits, no fun at all.
