It was borderline impossible to recolor a darkly-colored pokemon brightly and vice-versa, which is why gamefreak never did it. I think they work conceptually though, which is all I was trying to show. Hell, the reason a lot of gamefreak's shinies sucked before the switch to 3D models was for that reason alone.

The Hoenn starters all got kinda mediocre ones (although I'm admittedly partial to Sceptile), so here's some based off of their real-world inspirations (Gamecock, Mudskippers and Leaf Geckos, accordingly)

I like shinies the way they were originally implemented. Having a subtle change is only bad if you for some reason have an extreme need to be flashy. (And even then, the sparkles should do it nicely for you.)
