Gen 2 best gen

Not true. Never played gen 2 til recently and I'm having a blast with crystal. I love the style it has such as background and even the design of Pokemon
>>

That's true. I was just shitposting, the tails poster was really annoying.

>>
>>26858767
Very pleasant palettes (especially at night) and comfy music, especially some of the Kanto rearrangements.

I really want to make a ROMhack of Crystal but I'm too lazy to do anything but music covers because I love how the engine sounds in Crystal, so I end up just playing a bunch of hacks by other people.
>>
>>26858767
I have to admit, while HGSS's mood and pallettes are still top notch, Crystal does have some edges. That night time pallette is amazing.
>>
Goldenrod theme is so comfy, and the city with the kimono was so comfy. Gen two will always be my favorite even the remake was good.

>>
>>26858767
The music was top tier. The team really turned what they had to work with into the best.
The games progression was super chill. "Oh you wanna skip that gym, go through the caves, and do this plot first? No prob famalam"
The transition from day/night was masterfully done, the only game that came close to GSC's nighttime atmosphere was DPPt, and still nothing can capture the dark contrast that GSC had that made you really feel like it was night.
>>
>>26859263
Reminder that you can and will (unless mods never wake up) get banned for saying you're underage, even if you're blatantly shitposting.

I hate to admit, but I'm more nostalgic of Silver than Red just because of all it's features. It's felt more like a proper adventure especially due to it's clock system and the return to Kanto definitely sealed off the deal

I think it's a bit more than nostalgia, the entire entire region felt like one massive playground, and because of the stellar music, everything fell into place perfectly.
HGSS only bolsters this by bringing your Pokemon into the mix, HGSS is simply outstanding.

I honestly have the fondest memories with gen 2. I have such a huge range of memories as well, the badass moments like facing off with Lance and Red, as well as the somber moments like hanging out in the National Park at night, or returning to Pallet Town. I wish I still had my Crystal version.

Gen 2 was always my favorite gen. The first video game I ever owned was Pokemon Gold, and before that, I collected a shit ton of the Pokemon cards, many of which were from the Japanese Neo series. I taught myself (some) Japanese just so I could read the fucking cards.

Although I got Pokemon Blue shortly after Pokemon Gold, it didn't feel as awesome IMO. One of the things that annoyed me in Blue was that if I wanted to use HM moves, I had to open up the start menu, go to the Pokemon, and select the HM move, rather than simply gong up to a tree or a body of water and pressing A, and having the pokemon use it on its own. Also, Gold felt like two fucking games in one, getting an entirely new region to visit after beating the Elite Four. The only postgame content in Blue was getting Mewtwo.

And on that note, HGSS were terrible remakes. Replacing all of the berry trees with acorns? Fuck that noise. I wanted to give my pokemon berries and gold berries (or at least oran and sitrus berries) that I picked off the trees,
>>
The only real problem with gen II was the fact that the placement of certain Pokemon was absolutely shit. I still feel as though Slugma is from gen III.
>>
>>26860417
That's beautiful, artist source?
>>
>>26860983
I dont remember where one even got slugma, but I have a very specific memory of having one and wanting to see what it evolved into, so much so that my ADD-riddled 8 year old self actually grinded for some time.

Ok, I don't think Hoenn is the comfiest when we have things like genII and IV, but "furthest thing from comfy"?

>all of them isolated towns and cities
>the dark Jagged Pass
>route 113

I love gen 2 for a lot of reasons, comfiness is definitely a big one. No doubt about it, everyone mentions the comfiness. But aside from that, it has my favorite dex to date. It's full of really quirky Pokémon, many of them being pure gimmickmons like Unown, Shuckle and Wobbuffet, many of them being severe underdogs like Ledian, Sunflora or Magcargo. They're all also cute and loveable as shit, but you still have the "cool" mons like Gatr, Scizor, Skarmory and Tyranitar that people still really like to this day.
I know people hate this part, but what I liked a lot about Johto was how rare a lot of the Pokémon were, especially during Pokémania and them really pushing the "NEW GENERATION" thing, it felt like a huge discovery when I found a Heracross in the trees, Wobbuffet in Dark Cave, the gift Tyrogue in Mt Mortar, or Natu and Smeargle in the blocked off area of Ruins of Alph that's only accessible through Union Cave.
Even among Kantomon they placed a fucking Lapras in Union Cave that only comes out during Fridays, that got me excited as shit as a kid when I heard about it and made me stay up all night that Thursday.
Sadly, the impact of these things probably wouldn't reach someone today, as the internet has gotten far more widespread and mystery in games has mostly died off.
>>
>>26861308
Holy shit I forgot about that guy with the Tyrogue!

Also completely agreed, I know others don't like that element but I love 'rare' pokemon. Gone are days when I would show off what I managed to catch to my school friends, but I still like pokemon that are a little tougher to find. Whether its intensely specific stuff like Feebas or simply hunting for gen 6 mons amongst the wealth of others in X/Y.
>>
>>26861308
>>26861356
I understand your points, but I disagree. The new pokemon should have been more present because during a normal gen II playthrough, even by defeating all trainers, you'll see around 200 pokemon, but most of these are gen I, so you are left with holes in your pokedex that are not always easy to fill
>>
>>26861389
They new pokemon were still present, but just harder to find. Not that it matters anyway if you're just catching them to "fill a pokedex", something you normally won't attempt to do in a playthrough until postgame.
The real journey for me in Pokemon as a kid was hunting down every Pokemon, no matter how tedious or hard. It made kid me feel like an adventurer in the days before the advent of widespread internet, and taking all of that into account I have to agree with the other anons.

I've always hated the tediousness of actually CATCHING pokemon though, so i'm glad that XY/ORAS have casualized the catch rates for legendaries that i'm just going to fucking box.
>>
>>26861389
Are you autistic? I didn't even present an argument.
>>
>>26861456
Are you stupid? I didn't attack anything of what you said, I just expressed my opinion on the gen II pokemon distribution
>>
>>26858767
Do other gens have pokemon only found at night/day?
>>
something about the higher pitches in the old gens make me like the music more.

Why is this?
>>
>>26861389
That's just like your opinion man. I liked the fact that trainers were using a mix of gen 1 and 2 pokemon, and with the abudance of gen 1s it really did make the Johto pokemon feel like 'new species' monsters, it added to the feeling of Gen 2 being a fully-fledged sequel. Something which I personally miss as the franchise has gone forward.

I'm one of those people that would actually prefer if gym leaders/elite four members just used teams that suit them instead of having to be 'new pokemon only' or 'new pokemon as ace'. I actually liked Chuck having Poliwrath as his ace. I mean I can understand why they focus on new pokemon in new gens, but it feels highly inorganic. And as for the pokedex? So what.

Gen 2 is comfy for several reasons. The music is GOAT, the graphics is just primitive enough to be charming but modern enough to look great, the johto region is based on old japan which automatically makes it super comfy

16 FUCKING BADGES AND FINAL FIGHT WITH RED

I still consider Gen 2 the highpoint of the franchise, even tough the level curve sucks and too many johto mons are available to late (larvitar, houndour, slugma, murkrow)

Comfyness power level:

every town felt like home. Even when I was new to playing it. Every generation beyond that gave me some overwhelming sense of unease and need to explore. In gen 2,I was very comfortable with exploring the areas. Like the theme of the game was "Relax, and take your time." I think that's why Gen 2 had such a strong impact on me. It was very welcoming, vibrant, and sweet, being an old game and all.

For me, it's the lore. There is so much history in this region, it's like a time capsule of an era long gone. A simpler, more peaceful time. It's the only region I've felt this way for, no other could even come close. I want Alola's lore to do this again. Please.

Kanto is bland, but it's better than Kalos. Maybe I'm just thinking of the games, though, Kalos was actually kind of pretty. The mushroom town and ice town were really nice.

Also, how was Hoenn uncomfortable, if I might ask? There were a bunch of hidden areas and cool things to find, it was a damn cool region.

Sinnoh and Johto are definitely the two most comfy regions.

Doing what? Do you want me to elaborate further, or what? I think it's a really pretty, vibrant game with a lot of fun things to do in it like exploring all the small islands to the right of the region, diving, contests and Pokeblock making, secret bases, the Battle Frontier, all the new things after you beat the game and the fun little surprises in things like the Lilycove sales, Mirage Island, etc. In addition, I thought the music was fantastic and the region was overall very well suited to exploration, which I believe is a pretty large part of Pokemon.
>>
>I can make a treehouse in the middle of nowhere and just live my days peacefully with my pokemon.

As much as I would love to do this in the pokeworld, I don't think that makes Hoenn that great.
>>
>>26865810
I have my opinion, you have yours. I don't get why people here get so confrontational when Hoenn comes up.
>>
>>26865801
Sweat alone ruins Hoenn. Good thing you don't experience that just by playing the games!
>>
>>26864303
Well they had like every map up to Floaroma done, all the Pokémon in those areas ported, sprites and trainers done, and like half of Sinnoh's music has already been independently ported to Gen 2, but they hit a super huge roadblock because neither of the hackers working on it knew how to do map connections.

It's two years later from that point, though, and with the Crystal disassembly (it was originally a Gold hack) map connections are trivial, so they went back to working on it again starting over in a new base. All the map layouts and sprites are done though, so I think it's just a matter of porting what they already had and then a demo can come out.
>>
>>26865983
Oh, nice. I guess it won't have all of the Pokémon up to gen4 though, right? Platinum Red/Blue for the GBA does it, and apparently it has been hard for them
>>
>>26866042
I'm pretty sure it will just have Platinum's regional Dex, maybe with some extra since Crystal can hold 253 Pokémon at the moment.

Just something small I learnt while looking up some other information.

In gen 2, the nurse says "Good evening! You're out late." before going into the default spiel. Its also the only genration with different dialogue between morning, day and night. While in other gens with day/night cycle they only comment if you show up in the morning, while in gen 6 they only comment if you show up in the evening.

Again, its super minor but it adds a little to the atmosphere. It feels a little like the nurse is scolding you for being out so late.

Truly, a comfy gen.

This desu. I feel like all of the newer games are too linear. I don't mind having cut scenes and following along one path the first time through, but after playing it a second time, it gets really stake and fucking annoying at certain times. For example, I recently bought Alpha Sapphire after beating Omega Ruby last year. I really enjoyed Omega Ruby, and it was a fun playthrougj, even with all of the cut scenes, since they were new content from the original gen 3 games. But after playing Alpha Sapphire and in particular, the Kyorge part, I was pissed beyond belief. Not only did I have to sit through a minute long cut scene when resetting after failed attempts of catching, but after catching it, there was like 5 minutes of cut scene afterwards that I couldn't skip through. It was all shit I didn't care about after playing the game once through already, and after sitting through cut scene after cut scene when resetting to capture Kyorge, I just wanted to save my game and take a break. I just hope in SuMo, we get less of a linear feel to the game and an option to skip long cut scenes.

>Makes me feel as if the game was made to end the series

Nah, not all of them. Just Ruby/Sapphire. They also wanted to change some of the basic stuff (4 pokemon with 6 moves each instead of 6 pokemon with 4 moves each, for example), but they didn't. Kind of the same goes for Black and White, but taking away old Pokémon completely was just way too risky.

Gen 2 has tons of little touches like that if you look through the code. Did you know Pikachu has a special Surf sprite in Gen 2 if you transfer one with Surf from Gen 1? Or that all Pokémon have a special "length" stat in their data that only ever gets used for Magikarp?
>>
>>26872446
It had two regions because it would've been tiny as all fuck otherwise.
Johto is the smallest region.
>>

All thanks to Satoru Iwata.

>>26873257
And yet Game Freak is so incompetent that they had maxed out the cartridge space with just half of the region. If it wasn't for see above who re-coded everything they couldn't have fitted Kanto in the extra space.
>>
>>26873257
so what? it's still something awesome that god only knows why they never did again
>>
>>26865319
>>26858767

I don't get it. What lore does Johto have that makes it so different? It really doesn't have much other than in Ecruteak City.

Compare it with something like Sinnoh where you can see instances of lore literally everywhere: the three lakes, Eterna City's statue, Solaceon Town (this was so good in hindsight with the connection Arceus and the Unown had with Sinjoh Ruins), Celestic Town, Mt. Coronet, and the damn library.

Seriously, the library is so damn good. There's so much stuff here:

http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Sinnoh_myths

Combined with how large and diverse Sinnoh is geographically, the actual day/night music changes, and the sweet jazz playing throughout your journey, Sinnoh is the comfiest for me but Johto is a second. It feels like all of the things that people say Johto did well was actually done the best in Sinnoh.

Sure, I guess those parts add to the region's history and reinforce the old-Japanese feel to it, but there's nothing unifying a central lore there for the region and the myths. Johto has different things that make it interesting, but they never tie in together. Heck, the Ruins of Alph and the Unown was used better with Sinnoh since Arceus summoned them to create Dialga, Palkia, or Giratina in the Sinjoh Ruins event.

You have areas in Sinnoh that make different parts interesting, but things come together to create a more central theme with creationism. Yet, you still have things separate from that like the Lunar duo with Darkrai and Cresselia, the Regi trio and Regigigas, etc.
>>
It's because Johto is so different from the other regions. They usually have an urban center consisting of multiple towns, connected by urban type routes.
Johto is for the most parts untouched nature, the towns are old-fashioned, quiet and comfy and even the one bigger city has this peaceful, provincial feel to it.
G/S/C managed to perfectly capture the unique charm of rural Japan.
>>
>>26874900
I can add something, although it's mostly an observation. The Sinnoh myth still lives, in a way. Hearthome is a city built on the connection between humans and pokemon, an extension of the origins you learn. I could be convinced this is the only place in the entire pokeworld where humans and pokemon are truly equal, as space is given to both.

I suppose there is a point to be had for cohesion, as there are plenty of places that are designed after ages old structures, but they aren't as interesting, not even if they have lore attached to them. No region is objectively the best because all the regions not named Johto or Sinnoh have their own advantages and disadvantages. Johto and Sinnoh suffer from objective problems that place them below the rest, though of course not unplayable.

And I prefer the lore not being unified because it feels more natural that way. Everywhwre you go there's a new history lesson or tradition to discover. And HGSS only added to it with Sinnoh Ruins, Embedded Tower, and making Lake of Rage more interesting.

I caught a shiny Tentacruel while swimming near the secret area. Oh, nostalgia.

Even roamers was kind of fun in gentoo. Maybe it was because I had friends over and we were all trying to get them at the same time. Maybe it is because it was the first time so it still had novelty. But something about a legend popping up out of nowhere and you having to chase it down was cool at the time.

It made me pretty much immune to grinding. Before my romp through Johto the thought of running around in the same patch of grass for hours was sickening. However having to Train up 3 different Pokemon from the ground up for the E4, those three being a Murkrow, Swinub and Flaafy, I feel nothing. Anything will be less tedious than the 3 days I spent training those fuckers up to level 45.

It's hard to put into words but I feel like gen2 is more of an extension of gen1 than a fresh start like every other gen, so it focused on expanding and fleshing out the world that was already there instead of introducing all these new characters, settings and concepts and trying to have an 'epic' plot about legendaries returning and shit.
Therefore you spend a lot more time on the minutiae of Pokemon and mundane situations and side content. That's what makes them comfy as fuck I guess.
Not to mention revisiting Kanto after the main conflict has already been solved and you can explore the region at your leisure and do the gyms in any order.
