I have a lot of these "carddass". I need to see if there are adequate scans of them online. If not, I'll scan them and upload them myself. They feature artwork of the original 151 and some extras (like pic related) not seen on any other pieces of merchandise.

The holofoil ones go for a decent bit. The "secret cards" that feature trainers do, as well. The regular cards don't cost a terrible amount, but I guess it adds up if you get the entire set. I got mine for a steal, so I'm lucky, though it wasn't the whole set. I'm working up to it, though. It seems like the cards range from $3-$10 each on average, depending on the card and the condition, but like I said, multiply that times 151 + the secret cards, and you've got yourself a collection worth a good bit. But I adore the old Sugimori style, so I love the cards that I have.

I know that artists change their styles over time and that I have no right to complain, but I really miss his old stuff. At the risk of sounding cheesy, it was the art style that illustrated my childhood.

Yeah, but anime styles have changed consistently since at least the 70s. I guess it's not a big wonder that Sugimori changed his style as well. It's like a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" type of thing. People like us miss his new style and are sad that it changed. But if it didn't change, you'd have people complaining that it looks like old school anime and that Sugimori should change his style (or that Gamefreak should get a new artist, even), to modernize the official Pokemon art.

But yeah, I agree. I happen to like both styles, new and old. I just try to appreciate the old for what it was and what it meant to me as a kid, as well as enjoy the new, cause I know years down the line, I'm going to look at the art we have now and relish in the awesome memories.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think anyone in this thread actually prefers the new style. We just accept it. Being bitter at the new artwork won't accomplish anything. I don't think Sugimori is gonna be like "wow I should really go back to my art style from like 20 years ago!" We just have to enjoy the old pieces of existing artwork, I guess.

I mean, you're not wrong, but if you put yourself in Sugimori's shoes, it makes sense. You want to keep up with the industry and everything, you know? I completely disagree. I think using a different and objectively better and FAR more interesting art style would set him (and Pokémon) apart of an industry of mediocrity. I genuinely think kids and more older people would really enjoy it.
It just looks better and really would stand out.

The problem with "more interesting" is that it's harder for the outsourced animators to replicate. It takes more effort to learn than just copying what every other anime is using.

Trust me I know. It's also just plain easier to draw. It's the Family Guy effect. They were the first ones to start this round, monotone style, at least in 'western' animation. It proved to be cheap and everyone liked it. Using the Power Puff reboot as an example again, they use that style and outsource the animating so cheaply that the errors are so blatantly obvious it's ridiculous.
Normally I wouldn't ever tell anyone to waste their time on /co/umblr, but there's often an animation error thread and since the PPGs reboot is by far the worst offender in recent history you can see a lot of it.

Anyway it seems like something exactly like this has happened to Jap animation and has even extended to video games.
