Nah, it's just a common thing in 3D games to let you know when you're lined up correctly to interact with an object. It also helps to make it clear what is and isn't an intractable object. For a good example of this, see Blaine's gym in Red and Blue. In a similar vein: Who cares that the game gives you an attack effectiveness forecast now either? If you know your type match ups you would have picked the most effective move anyway so what's it matter to you. But for those who are new or generally forgetful it saves them tripping over moves with no idea why it's not working.

Even if it tells you the effectiveness of your moves it's not like it tells you the effectiveness of what your opponent is using is anyway. You're still going to have to remember match ups for the sake of switching out your own Pokemon so there's still something there to promote a deeper understanding of the mechanics/for you to feel smart about.
