Its actually my favourite starter, though I'm of course in the minority. I played BW without witnessing the internet's reaction on the Unova starters so I just viewed Emboar as a regular Pokemon, I enjoyed using him.

Blaziken is not speedy, and if we're factoring hidden abilities Blaziken and Infernape have different roles. Blaziken is a set up Pokemon. Infernape comes fast and relatively strong out of the gate. Emboar is also not very bulky. It has HP but low defense. The HP is just there for the recoil gimmick more than significant bulk.

I wouldn't say any starter is really forgettable, a decent amount are popular, a decent amount are infamous and most of the remaining have some memes attributed to them.

I would probably go with something like the Piplup line, even if it got a a lot of screentime in the anime. The Chespin line might become the most forgettable after gen VI has been around for a while though.
