Even though we know the outcome of the VS Shota battle, I actually enjoyed his role quite a bit in the anime. Early on before we knew about him and his role, when all that we knew was from the OP that he was following in Ashs footsteps that's when he was the biggest threat.

And as we watched Shota grow from an extremely novice Trainer into someone who's become skilled and quite knowledgeable about how to fight with Pokemon he's like an entirely different character. Honestly he's probably one of my favorite. Had he not beaten Ash in any of the prior battles Shota would have been the one to beat Ash in the League or else his role would have been pointless.

Shota's was primarily used as a device to show Ash as a competent Trainer and to have Ash compared to someone similar to him.

Let's expand this line of thought. The fact that Ash still feels pain tells me they're going to do something with it during the league. I don't think it's going to be a major focus during Ash vs Shota because I doubt Mega Sceptile will be able to push Ash Greninja to the brink of defeat. 10% Zygarde should be weaker than Darkrai or even Latios. It still wouldn't be as bad as Tobias or even Alan if he really does end up using a team consisting of champion's aces.

No big crowd is going to see Ash beat Alain, he's probably no going to be treated as the hero of Kalos or as the new champion so it doesn't feel like anything. He won't get any trophy, it'll just be some empty shit, like well you beat the guy who won the Kalos League here's your no trophy.

I want to see Ash win in front of a crowd of hundreds of people, not some battle in a facility or whatever that only a handful of people might see.
