God, pokemania was something else. I remember the sheer excitement of getting my first pack of cards and the first time I played pokemon at my friends house, on their older brothers gameboy. I think I was 8 when I got my yellow gameboy with pokemon blue. On my 10th birthday, I got a pack of japanese gen 2 cards at universal studios, right around the time that concrete info about gen 2 was coming around. First card was a shiny pichu, still have that card.

Feels like a lifetime ago, but it was good.

Beast Wars used to come on Fox Kids during the week around 4PM CST alongside the Xmens cartoon and a cartoon about a kid robot who idolized what he thought was a massive robot but was actually a mech piloted by his father figure.

Burger King had a toy event where they'd give out "gold" plates with pokemons names on them and they were pretty heavy. This was a summer time deal.

Most schools banned Pokemon cards because people would steal them or rip one another off in trades. The games were allowed to stick around though.

I actually never got into Pokemon until I was 16. I'm 19 now. I always saw Pokemon on the TV as a kid but I just wasn't interested. Then BW came around and I decided to try them out, and I loved them. Since then I've played every gen so far if I count remakes. Oh man, I hate not being able to play the actual Gen 1-2 pokemon games back in the day. I'm 25 and didn't know English well enough, till I was 13 (Ruby was my first game).
Even though the fad did come over, I imagine if the games were translated in my language it would have been a lot more exciting.

All mine from when I was a child, no re-buys. Yellow is in the Pokemon game boy and Red is in the GameBoy.

Only had the foresight to keep the box from Red when I was a kid and its survived 4 moves since then. The only game left that still saves is my Blue version.

Had most of these little fuckers since I was 1998-2000. Still collect get more every chance I get. Have all of my old cards, the Tiger Pokedex, the first two movies on VHS, the hype tape they sent in the mail, the old keychain figures (I always took the chains off so I could put them with my Tomys), a Dragonite bounce ball, tons of the BK toys etc. Good times, good times.

Hard, I got into Pokemon when I was 17 and my first game was PMD Red Rescue, so I had no idea what I was doing when I played the main games for the first time.

But back when it used to be "cool" to have them on the playgrounds, I got some stuff like this without ever buying a single card pack.
