They weren't in the same run though. I started the game and didn't know how to catch pokemon because I didn't bother to learn. I tried with Charmander and didn't get past Brock. Then I tried with Bulbasaur, wrecked Brock but Mt. Moon was a struggle. So I restarted one last time with Squirtle and had no problems. It took a friend looking at my file and asking why Blastoise was my only pokemon before I realized you could catch more. I was only 5, but that's still pretty bad.

My first starter was either a Squirtle or a Bulbasaur, I restarted the game several times when I first played blue.

I don't remember enough from the year 1998 to tell you anything else, but statistically my first capture was either a Pidgey, Caterpie, Weedle, or Rattata.

First game was yellow that I shared with my sister (parents didn't understand vidya) and we tried to keep our Pokemon separate. She claimed Pikachu as hers, so the first mon I caught for myself was a NidoranF. Fast forward to Gold as my first game to myself and Chikorita as my first proper starter.

It's literally the first time I'm being called a "furry", since the single thing I fucking despise the most is furfaggotry.
Actually, when I first played Pokémon (Emerald), I'm pretty sure I knew Torchic evolved into Combusken (and Treecko, into Grovyle). I was 10 back then (I think?)
And all I knew about Pokémon was because of the good ol' TV show. On my first playthrough, I caught like, 12 Pokémon if not less (completed the Pokédex in the later games. I just caught the ones I thought looked cool, I guess)
And Ralts was the first one I really liked at first.
I didn't even know it was rare.
(I think I had a lot of luck. I even caught a Shiny Lotad on that same playthrough lmao)

I don't remember the first Pokémon I caught, but my first ever starter Pokémon came from a brand new Pokémon Red cartridge hired from Blockbuster at the end of January of the year 2000. It was a Charmander named U. It evolved into a Charmeleon before being deleted when I got motion sickness from focussing on the gameboy screen for too long and turned it off. I didn't know saving was a thing, despite playing for at least an hour or two. I ended up in hospital for the day with suspected meningitis, but it was really just motion sickness from concentrating on the screen for too long.

But something tells me I reset the game and switched starters, I believe my older brother recognized you needed to do this to get all the starters so I reset to give him a Charmander and Squirtle then started up a 2nd attempt at the game with Squirtle as my starter for the easier fight with Brock. I was 7 when the games came out, so I don't really remember.

Did you ever get a random shiny when you were young? I feel like my first shiny is the only occurrence I actually remember from when I was a kid, or from any of the games for that matter.

It's a 1-in-8192 chance, they're pretty rare. I've been playing Pokémon since Blue, and didn't find a random shiny until shiny Cascoon in Pearl, so it stuck with me.
