Handholding would be the moves supereffectiveness and interaction with abilities being shown in the battle screen. It would be the XP share in Gen 6. Things that make the game actively easier for the lazy.

Highlighting what hutton to press to pick up an item isn't handholding, because it's already obvious and doesn't decrease difficulty in any way. Is saying (A: next, B: back) in a dialogue window handholding too? Is having an (X) next to the "Pull Lever" prompt in DS1 handholding? Obviously not.
