Gen 3 only sold poorly because of the low saturation of the GBA. Gen 4 sold well because of the high saturation the DS. Gen 4's abysmal showing tainted peoples view of pokemon and lead to Gen 5 underselling as people were once burned twice shy. (Also, 3DS was on the way in, so smart people were waiting for a 3DS instalment.)

Really, gen 4 was sub par on almost all levels. I still liked it but god almighty it was saved purely by better mechanics and a handful of decent pokemon.

That's understandable at least, but D/P did no favours either. One of the largest complaints is still the speed, and a lot of designs (cross gen evos for example) weren't exactly well received. I know several people that were driven out by D/P, and came back later (some after B2/W2, some after X/Y) to find they quite enjoyed the newer games.

Why are people calling Gen IV bad? I mean yeah, Diamond and Pearl were shit, and the entire generation had that god awful slow engine, but Platinum was pretty good, and HGSS is widely seen as among the best in the series
