Only items I use (other than balls) are one status item, one potion/healing item, and any protein/carbos/iron/etc that I find per route/gym. Yeah its a kids game but you can put limits on yourself to make it harder.

I wish they would remove EXP on capture to be honest, but only for a very specific reason: the few times I found shinies were when I was horde EV training, so the shiny Pokemon that I caught just fucks up my EV training numbers.
