I hope it's a replacement for the key stone.

You get one item that lets ANY pokemon (that has a mega evolution) mega evolve. You use your new diamond-shaped stone to mega evolve it.

This way you avoid the massive egg hunt that is searching for mega stones and scrolling through your bag for them all.

What if instead of multiple mega stones, we have one mega stone, but you have to register the mega evolutions in your keystone by unlocking the them via finding them in the field.

I still don't get why they just don't call it a mega stone, instead of giving each their own nameite. It can still be a held item and will only allow one mega to evolve during battle at a time. Just save a lot of space. One day their will be 200 different mega stones unless they stop after gen 7.

Not what I said. The individual pokemon still has to hold a mega stone. But there is a one-size-it-all mega stone.To "unlock" the ability to use that specific mega evolution, you have to find it in the field. For example, I want to use Mega Mawile. I have to first find the essence of Mega Mawile. Like finding mega stones in XYORAS, theres a glittering mark on the ground. I step on it and it says something like "Your Keystone has absorbed the essence of Mawile"

This way it cuts down on the evergrowing number of mega stones, but keeps the exploration/collection.

Because then you have the problem of having to remove it from one pokemon and on to the next when you want to use a different mega which is considerably more tedious than having multiple items.
There's also the added problem of good old human error and forgetting to change it.

It's about player convenience and the method we have now is considerably more convenient than what you're suggesting since you can just have Mega stones on the pokemon without having to switch them.
