The fact that we didn't get Z and thus no story development for it doesn't mean it wasn't there in XY. He's just XY's Mewtwo(Albeit way weaker), a legendary critter in some cave that can only be accessed after the league.

It's seriously a Miracle. Every single Distro poll i've ever seen has ended up with a Arceus distro. It's the first time i EVER see a non-legendary top the Poll. It's even more surprising considering the fact that this was the biggest one they've ever had.

Maybe i just wasn't paying attention though. Has any other non-legendary besides Greninja won these polls?

Well there was also a general gen 5 popularity poll in some Japanese magazine that was won by Chandelure.

Dorkly's poll was won by Charizard.

Bulbapedo says Memekip won the starter popularity poll conducted by Nintendo of Europe but I can't find any other source that would confirm this.

Other than that I don't remember any other major "popularity polls".

There were three Dream World polls, one for Japan, one for the west, and one for Korea.
Arceus won the two first, but Fug won the Korean one.

Well, i was specifically talking about these Jap polls. I just found it notable that Greninja won because distros make it appealing to vote for Rare pokemon, but apparently Greninja is so popular that people kept voting for it even when it's the easiest pokemon to find in Wonder Trade. Not even Lucario managed to top one of these polls, which goes as a testament to how big Greninja is over there right now.

It was a Popularity Poll that was offering the winner of the poll as a distribution. They even had a whole Celebration Broadcast to congratulate the "Best Pokemon as Chosen by the People". This fact also explains why Greninja won. If it had been a simple Distro, people would've simply voted Legendaries like they always do.

Japs don't vote for their favorite Pokemon technically, they probably voted for whatever one that want as an event, the reason why their's so many legends.
Genesect and trash Meloetta are only there because that's all people ask for on the Gts, imo Charizard would've been higher if this was a popularity contest, not an event contest.

Well its a combination of popularity and rare pokemon.

Its first and foremost a popularity poll, so there's a strong tendency towards that, but people who dont give a fuck about that and just want rare pokemon will skew it towards that.

Greninja, Charizard, Pikachu, Sylveon, Eevee are all pokemon that are illogical to vote for based purely off of distro relevancy, but theyre there anyway.

Honestly, I'm not really surprised by this list. Greninja's been generally pretty popular since it's introduction, Smash, competitive viability, and the anime helped it a lot. It's no doubt the flavor of the week.
