We've seen in the trailer in the OP that Ash battles Shota in what have to be the semi-finals. Ash and Alan's previous battle was interrupted and Alan is entering the league just to battle Ash, so Ash isn't losing against Shota and will face Alan in the finals. There's also absolutely no sign of a league-exclusive rival that people love memeing about.

The league and some gym battles are the only parts that are actually fun to watch. Trivializing the quarterfinals when Ash has lost at that round 3 times just seems cheap. He also has an End-game tier team which he's challenging the Gyms with, so no one could give him a challenge at this point.
